Integrity Before Intelligence: Why ECC Memory Matters When Private AI Informs Legal and Financial Decisions

A Technical Memo on Error-Correcting Memory, Silent Corruption and What a Principal Should Ask About It

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Confidentiality is half of what a private AI must guarantee. The other half is that its output is a faithful product of its inputs. This memo explains what error-correcting (ECC) memory does, why silent memory errors matter most where an answer feeds a signature, and how ECC memory is carried across the SARION range.

1. Two Promises, Not One

Most discussion of private AI concerns confidentiality: who can read what you type. A second promise gets less attention and matters as much. When the system produces an answer, the answer should be a faithful result of the model, the documents and the question, and not of a flaw in the hardware.

A principal reading a summary of a trust instrument, a reconciliation of figures or a draft clause is relying on the system to be right. If the answer is wrong, the fact that it stayed private is small comfort.

2. What Can Go Wrong in Memory

Memory holds the model's parameters and the working state of every request. Occasionally a stored bit changes by itself. Causes include electrical noise, manufacturing variance, heat and, rarely, radiation. The event is physical and unpredictable, and in ordinary memory it goes unnoticed.

What follows depends on where the flipped bit lands. Often nothing: the value is unused, or the effect is too small to alter any output. Sometimes the effect is dramatic and the system crashes, which is at least visible. The troublesome case is the quiet one, where a changed value alters a result slightly and nothing signals that it happened.

3. What ECC Does

Error-correcting code memory stores extra check information alongside the data. When data is read, the system can detect certain classes of error and correct some of them on the spot. Errors that cannot be corrected are reported rather than passed on silently.

SPECIFICATIONWhat ECC Is and Is Not

ECC reduces the chance that a memory error alters an output without anyone knowing. It does not make a model correct, and it does not stop a model from misreading a document. It addresses one failure class, the hardware one, and addresses it well.

4. Why It Matters More Here

Three features of private AI raise the stakes.

The output informs a decision. A mistake in a casual chat costs a moment. A mistake in a reading of a clause, a total or a date can cost a great deal, and it may not be noticed until much later.

Workloads run for long periods. A system that holds models and long documents in memory for hours or days gives errors more time to occur than a short interactive session does.

There is no vendor operations team behind it. A cloud provider monitors hardware health across a fleet and replaces components before a client sees a problem. A system in a private residence has no such team in the background, so integrity has to be a property of the design.

5. ECC Across the SARION Range

Every SARION tier carries ECC GPU memory.

Tier ECC GPU memory
SARION Confidant 96 GB
SARION Regent 192 GB
SARION Sovereign 192 GB per node, 384 GB across two nodes

SARION Monarch is described by its high-bandwidth memory plane of roughly 2.3 TB, as an institutional supercomputing architecture.

It is a deliberate choice, and one that we apply to every tier so that the integrity guarantee does not depend on how much the client spends.

6. What a Principal Should Ask

Any vendor of private AI hardware should be able to answer these without hedging.

  • Does the memory that holds the model and working data have error correction, and on which components?
  • What happens when an uncorrectable error occurs? Is it reported, and who sees the report?
  • How is hardware health monitored once the system is installed?
  • What is the service procedure when a component starts to fail?

If a vendor can speak only about speed and model size, the integrity question has probably not been asked.

7. Integrity Is Part of Trust

A sovereign system earns trust in two ways. It keeps data where the owner puts it, and it behaves the same way each time it is given the same input. The first is the headline. The second is what a principal relies on when they act.

ECC memory is a small line in a specification, and it supports the second promise. For work that ends in a signature, we regard it as a requirement.
